The Foundation__________________

In 1998, the Autonomous City of Ceuta created the mentioned Convivence Award that grants this award, materialised in a sculpture by Elena Álvarez Laverón and with an endowment of fifty thousand euros to award a “person or an institution in any country, whose work has contributed in a relevant and exemplary way towards improving human relations, fostering the values of justice, fraternity, peace, freedom, access to culture and equality between men”.

It is no coincidence that Ceuta grants this Award. In this Spanish city, Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus live together in peace and harmony. Four cultures, four religions with their different customs and religious beliefs. This “convivence” or living together in harmony represents a peculiarity for which the City and its inhabitants feel legitimately proud and which has been the inspiration for the Convivence Award Autonomous City of Ceuta.

In six years of history, this Award has relapsed in important personalities. Chronologically, this would be the history of our Award: The president of Spain D. Adolfo Suárez, the missionary Vicente Ferrer, the Association Messengers of Peace, the novelist Dominique Lapierre, the Town of El Salvador, and the Town of Madrid.

But our intention is not to finish here. From the Convivence Award Foundation we are working openly to develop and improving the intercultural cohabitation at our City with the organization of different events in the year: A sign of postal art, a contest of multicultural cinema, conferences and expositions, are some of them.

At the moment, we are immersed in the VII edition. This year we have invited to bring up candidacies over to 12.000 persons, institutions and organisms from all over the world; opposite to more than five thousand from the previous editions.

The time limit to presentation of candidacies finalizes the proximate February 15, 2005. The Jury will meet in our city in May the 15th, to give his pronouncement, and the posterior act of delivery will celebrate in the weekend of the 25 and June 26 as a final conclusion to the proceedings of the “Week of Cohabitation” and like the “Second Multicultural Cinema Sign's” preamble.

  IV NATIONAL CONGRESS

Immigration, Interculture and Coexistence________________________________

After extraordinary acceptance dispensed to three previous editions of National Congress's on Immigration, Interculture and Coexistence of the Autonomous City of Ceuta, is a great satisfaction for us to present the fourth edition.

We are looking for a double objective, on the one hand, to give continuity to the idea to dig into all those relevant aspects of the subject matter, that so much concern to us and how they have repercussion in our life, and in the other side, serving as forum of diffusion, interchange and research motor. With this, we attempted simplifying the solution to the current problems of a society, more and more complex and pluricultural.

The fourth edition of these Journeys will celebrate from October 25th to October 28, 2004 at the Assembly Hall of the Autonomous Palace in the City of Ceuta.
